Marketa Sivek is a self taught artist based in Chicago who grew up in the former Soviet regime of communist Czechoslovakia amid gray apartment buildings where color was sparse and sense of safety absent. Structures and houses that appear in her work are metaphors for shelters, as well as circumstances that can change on a dime. Sivek’s paintings of houses and skies produce powerful emotions in the viewer and feature sensational pools of color, piled on in heavy layers of paint.
